Is Underfloor Cooling Really Important?

When we talk about radiant floor systems, underfloor heating is often considered a modern comfort standard. However, when it comes to underfloor cooling, the main question is: is it truly necessary, or simply an advanced technological alternative?

In essence, underfloor cooling is not as essential as heating, especially in climates with medium to high humidity. The main reason lies in how the human body perceives comfort. During winter, cold floors feel very uncomfortable, which makes radiant floor heating highly noticeable and beneficial. In summer, however, the body does not require “cooling from below” in the same way. Comfort is usually achieved more effectively by lowering air temperature and controlling humidity.

Underfloor cooling works by circulating chilled water through pipes installed beneath the floor surface. This system absorbs heat from the room through thermal exchange, creating a gentle and consistent cooling effect without noise or air drafts. In dry climates, this solution can be highly effective and very comfortable. However, in humid areas, there is a risk of condensation forming on the floor surface if temperatures drop below the dew point. For this reason, it often needs to be combined with a dehumidification system or conventional air conditioning.

In practice, traditional air conditioning systems from manufacturers such as Daikin or Carrier are typically more effective for rapid cooling and humidity control. They respond faster to temperature changes and are better suited for extremely hot days.

Does this mean underfloor cooling is not important? Not necessarily. It has value in highly insulated homes with energy-efficient windows and integrated hydronic systems used for both heating and cooling. In modern low-energy buildings, it can be an elegant and efficient year-round comfort solution. However, for most standard homes—especially in Mediterranean climates where humidity is present—it is not a necessity.

In conclusion, underfloor cooling is more of an advanced and specialized solution rather than a basic requirement. Underfloor heating delivers immediate and noticeable comfort benefits, while underfloor cooling is only advantageous under specific technical and climatic conditions. The final decision should be based on local climate, insulation quality, and available budget.
