At a time when the cost of living is rising and managing the household budget has become a priority, saving electricity at home is one of the best ways to reduce monthly expenses. Data published by INSTAT shows that in the second quarter of 2025, electricity consumption by Albanian households increased by 10.2% compared to the previous year. In total, about 1,525 GWh of electricity were consumed nationwide, representing a 3.3% increase. This indicates that the use of electrical appliances in homes is growing, especially during summer and winter when the need for heating or cooling is greater.
One of the main factors behind the increase in consumption is the inefficient use of household appliances. Devices that produce heat such as electric water heaters, ovens, irons, and space heaters are among the biggest consumers of electricity. They are often used without planning and remain switched on longer than necessary. Organizing usage schedules, turning them off immediately after use, and avoiding the simultaneous use of multiple high-power appliances can significantly reduce the monthly bill.
The electric water heater, widely used in most Albanian households, deserves special attention. Setting the temperature to a moderate level rather than maximum, turning it on only shortly before use, and regularly cleaning it from limescale deposits help improve efficiency. A well-maintained water heater consumes less energy and heats water faster. If possible, installing an automatic timer can prevent unnecessary operation throughout the day.
Appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers also significantly affect energy consumption. Using them only when fully loaded, selecting eco programs, and washing at temperatures of 30–40°C can considerably reduce energy use. Many households still use high temperatures, although modern detergents are effective even at lower temperatures. Avoiding the drying function on dishwashers and allowing dishes to dry naturally also saves additional energy.
The refrigerator is one of the few appliances that runs 24 hours a day, so every detail matters. Leaving the door open for long periods, placing warm food inside, or positioning it near the stove increases energy consumption. The temperature should be balanced and not colder than necessary. Regular defrosting when the ice layer exceeds 5 mm improves performance and reduces the load on the compressor. A damaged door seal can cause continuous cold loss and higher electricity use.
In the kitchen, the electric oven is another major source of energy consumption. Frequently opening the door during cooking lowers the internal temperature and requires more energy to restore it. When possible, using a microwave is a more economical alternative, as it consumes about half the energy of a traditional oven. Turning the oven off a few minutes before the cooking time ends and using the remaining heat is also a simple but effective practice.
During summer, the air conditioner becomes one of the main reasons for higher electricity bills. Setting the temperature too low significantly increases energy consumption. The difference between outdoor and indoor temperatures should not be extreme. Using the dehumidification mode and regularly cleaning the filters help improve efficiency. Proper window insulation and using curtains during sunny hours also reduce the need for intensive cooling.
Another often underestimated factor is “phantom” energy consumption. Televisions, decoders, computers, and chargers continue to consume electricity even when not actively used. This invisible consumption can account for 5–10% of the annual electricity bill. Using power strips with switches or unplugging devices when not in use is a simple step toward saving energy.
Ultimately, saving electricity at home does not necessarily require major financial investments. Changing daily habits, using appliances wisely, and maintaining them regularly can lead to significant long-term savings. At a time when energy consumption in Albania is increasing, awareness and individual action remain key to more sustainable energy management and better household budgeting.
